I don't believe you need to type the data by hand.

Go to the bottom of this page for information on downloads and on ordering
cd-roms of gazetteers, including those of foreign lands. It seems you can
download whatever you need.

Otherwise, you may query the database with individual names by clicking on
"United States and Territories*" near the top of the page. This will take you
to

<http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form>;

where you may enter the name of a town, etc. as "feature name" to find out
where it is.
