Dear Listers,

I have been a NORWAY-L member for about a week, and am absolutely overwhelmed with the knowledge and resources you provide each other (not to mention the # of emails)!! Twelve years ago I became interested in genealogy and tracing my Norwegian roots. I was unable to get beyond my grandparents, who emigrated in the late 1800's from Norway, and soon lost interest. My cousin, on her third trip to Norway was finally able to find a little information which rekindled my interest. And, finding this website quite by accident, is really exciting! I have already learned so much about Fylkes, Kirkesogns, and gards just from reading your emails.

One document in my possesion shows that my maternal grandfather, Johan Edvard Rafaelsen was born in 1857, in Ytteroy; father was Rafael Ericksen, mother was Olive Johannesdatter. A second document called him Johan Edvard Lotvik with Raffael Forberg, his father (an unmarried man) and Olive Lotvik (an unmarried woman), his mother. A third paper called him Johan Edvard Rafaelsen, his father as Rafael Eriksen, and Olive Johannesdatter, as his mother. The third paper is dated March, 1872. In the USA my grandfather's name was John Edward Forberg, Are there any Listers out there from Ytteroy or Lavanger?
