When I was a little girl Christmas started at home in the early hours
with the beautiful tree and stockings hung by Santa and opening
packages. All the glorious smells from the Christmas breakfast and then
off to Gramma's and Grandpa's house about seventy five miles away. All
the family -extended family -nieghbors
-and friends would gather there.Gramma's wood cookstove would feel so
good and be filled with food -
all the women would be busy setting up the tables with every wonderful
dish to try---the smell was to
make the mouth water.Grandpa had his pipe going and he stayed in the
corner chair just watching all that was going on.Little children coming
and hugging him and climbing onto his lap and so many they would be
hanging on the sides of the chair.Grandpa had cut a tree from his woods
and set it up in the living room and Gramma had decorated it with all
the old ornaments. There were piles of presents-something for everyone.I
can still hear the laughter of children and the visiting of folks and
feel and smell all that means so much to me.We had so many holidays and
family gatherings together and I am thankful for all the
memories----Christmas is very different now -but the family still shares
the love and warmth that Gramma and Grandpa started in that old
farmhouse.
However you celebrate the holidays, may you all have some of the family
warmth and happiness that I have, Christine
