One American-Norwegian mother had an interesting Christmas tradition.

The tradition was that once she sat down at the Christmas feast, she was not allowed to get out of her chair until the meal was over. If she did, she claimed, the hens would stop laying and the cows would go dry.

It sounds to me like a charming way to get a little rest and let someone else do the jumping up. Smart lady. I think I will try it even though we don't have hens or cows.
