The Tacoma Tribune had a story Sunday, June 29, 2003, about the first woman
to walk across America...She was a Norwegian. Her family hid the trip as a
"shameful abandonment of her womanly duties". Helga Estby and her daughter
walked from Spokane to New York City in 1896 for a $10,000.00 prize to save
the family farm. They averaged 27 miles a day. The prize was not awarded
as promised. It's quite a story and the following URL has the article,
except for the picture of Helga and Clara. The picture was in the paper. I
can scan and email the picture to anyone that 'really' wants it. I don't
know any more about them than the article and the fact there is a book
available through the U of Idaho.
