Bart:
What you mention about Elizabeth Koren is discussed around here
occasionally. One school of thought is that her genteel existence caused
her to be pampered and above volunteering in the Egge household. The other
is that it would have been a come down for Helena Egge, a dynamo of a
Norwegian kone, to request assistance and preferred to "do it herself," too
proud to accept help.
Elizabeth obviously did get on Helena's nerves, with Ulrich and his wife
being asked to leave in early March of 1854. It was not a matter of
roomers, for Mons Grinager, of Civil War fame, was to live in the Egge home
later on.
The Korens were made of good stuff, serving that congregation 88 years, 57
by Ulrich and another 31 by son Paul. Early on, there had been hefty
attrition of immigrant Church of Norway pastors, broken spirits due to a
variety of stressors.
