When Germany invaded Norway in 1940, a German ship in Kristiansand harbor shot the top off the steeple of the Kristiansand Domkirke. This action so outraged my father, that he spoke of nothing else for days. He gathered photographs and all the information that he could find about the steeple, and because his hobby was woodworking, he decided to build a scale model of the steeple. It took almost six months, but when he was finished, the ten foot tall model stood in a place of honor in his living room and tolled the hours of the day, just like the original in Kristiansand.
