Subject: IGI Batch Number Project commences...

Okey Doke...

With Christmas and New Years out of the way, I'm ready to tackle the Batch
numbers.
I made a partial page for a couple of parishes in Aust-Agder just to test
things out.
http://www.compusmart.ab.ca/elien/norway/austagder.html
Take a look and send me your suggestions.

Here are some things to think about:

1) I decided to use the Parish names as they are spelled in FamilySearch.
This might seem like "preserving errors", but the purpose of the batch
number lists is to be an aid in using the FamilySearch IGI, so spelling the
way the LDS did will probably avoid confusion. I can put entries like
"Austre Moland - see Ostre Moland" to help things out. What do you think?

2) I put a link at the top of the page to John Follesdal's clerical
districts page. He has an excellent history of each parish for every Fylke
showing when it was formed, sokns split out or added and when etc. I never
asked John for permission yet!!! Can we link, John? I don't think he'll
mind. That John is just a peach!

3) Each Parish has a link to the Family History Library Catalog for that
parishes film notes.
That will make it easier for Daraleen to rag on us about "Get the films!!!!"

4) Keep in mind, we're only working on the IGI batches at the moment. Vital
Records can probably get incorporated later fairly easily, but it's IGI only
for this effort.
(I should have a warning to that effect on the submission form. I'll do
that.)

Here's a page that I want listers to use to submit their batch numbers:
http://www.compusmart.ab.ca/elien/norway/batchsubmit.html
By using a form I'll get the numbers, dates, location etc. in the same
format from everyone.
Take a look and see if it makes sense to you all.
If you have sets of batch numbers that are complete, go ahead and submit.
Try to make sure you're "complete" for each Parish.
I'm working on an instruction page.

I can't figure out how to divide up volunteers so we don't get too much
duplication.
I'm thinking there was a lot of emigration from some parts of Norway, but
very little from others. So if everyone submits their "own" parish, I'll
tend to get 16 duplicates for some parishes and none at all for lots of
others.
Any ideas?

What if I asked, on-list, for 4 volunteers for each fylke? (specifying which
fylke)
I could take the first 4 replies, send them messages, then they could divide
up the parishes in the fylke between themselves off-line?

Let me know your ideas,
