Subject: [NYKINGS] Cypress Hills Cemetery-Brooklyn alert

Hello,
Please pass this along to any other lists or concerned people.
I wanted to let you all know that Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn, which has been in receivership and then bankruptcy, is supposed to return to plot holder control. An election for a board of directors is scheduled to be held at the Kings County Courthouse in the jury selection room on Thursday, April 5 at 2 p.m.
However, the court-appointed group which has been running the cemetery, and which has been criticized in the press and by government officials, is preparing to back its own board which would keep them in control. There is an article (online) in the NY Post on Saturday, March 10 about it, which discusses this potential continuation of the lucrative patronage system. It can be found at: http://www.nypost.com/commentary/26063.html
The title is: "Battle over Cypress Hills Patronage Plum Heats Up" and the first paragraph reads,
"Politically connected patronage appointees who have been collecting hefty fees for eight years managing Cypress Hills Cemetery are just weeks away from losing their pot of gold. But they're maneuvering to keep the checks coming." It further reads, "employees of BPC Management, the court-appointed firm overseeing day-to-day operation of the cemetery since 1995, are planning to run their own slate of candidates in a bid to maintain control. The bylaws don't make any provision for that. But they want to keep the patronage mill going, charged one critic."
I urge any Cypress Hills Cemetery plot holders to come to the meeting, or if you cannot attend, express your feelings to the NY Attorney General's Office in Manhattan at 212- 416-8400 or your local government officials. The cemetery is our collective heritage and we must preserve it.
Thank you and best wishes,
