On 03/17/2001 (8:56:56 AM EST), as part of an eMail, Pam Hass ()
asked,

"I am trying to find the best place to find information about Flushing,
NY so I can post a query. From what I've found, Flushing info is in King
and Queen Co., and since I want to check back to the mid 1800's, I'm not
sure what direction to take! Can anyone help?"

The Town of Flushing was one of the original 5 towns when Queens County
(one of the original 12 counties in New York State) was created on November
1, 1683. The Village of Flushing (an area inside the Town of Flushing)
was incorporated in 1813.

HOWEVER, the borders of the Flushing, NY Post Office (including all its
branches, referred to as postal stations) and hence places with a "Flushing,
NY" mailing address extend beyond the borders of the Town of Flushing and
the County of Queens. These places in Kings County with a "Flushing, NY"
mailing address are in the Ridgewood section of what was the Town of Bushwick
(one of the original 6 towns of Kings County, also an original county of
New York State created on November 1, 1683).

Yes, there were/are places in Kings County with a "Flushing, NY" mailing
address (as well as places with a "Jamaica, NY" mailing address), just
as there are places in Queens County with a "Brooklyn, NY" mailing address.
(Parts of Howard Beach in southwestern Queens have a "Brooklyn, NY" mailing
address and part of East New York in southeastern Kings County have a "Jamaica,
NY" mailing address.)

Please bear in mind that postal zones are non-conforming administrative
districts and there is no rule, regulation or custom that these postal
zones have to align themselves with municipal or community borders. (The
last line of any place's address is NOT (and has never been) "city, state
and ZIP Code"; rather, it is "postal city, postal state and ZIP Code".)

I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.

Regards,

Walter Greenspan
