We would like to invite you to visit The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse
for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at
http://www.poorhousestory.com
We have just published a section of the 1824 investigation into poor relief
and poorhouses (also known as almshouses); we posted the section dealing
with Brooklyn and KINGS County. (At the top of the page you can read more
about the two reports ... one in 1824 and one in 1857 ... as well as the
text of the law establishing a statewide system of county poorhouses which
was passed also in 1824 as a result of this investigation.)
Then...for pure fun <grin> ... we posted scans of a picture postcard which
shows a ceramic platter with a picture of the Brooklyn Almshouse! (Takes a
while to load; but we think you will like it.)
If you have visited our site recently, you may need to click REFRESH on your
browser to see the new material.
If you are new to the site,
DIRECTIONS:
At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then click NY on
the table of states, and KINGS/BROOKLYN on the table of counties.
There are some other pages on the site which may help you better understand
poorhouses. They are all linked (to the left)off the homepage and include:
HISTORY, LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS, and FEATURED ARTICLES. You may want to also
review the ARCHIVED NEWSLETTERS to get an overview of what has been posted
on the website and what some of our issues have been.
The only way the material on the website will grow is through the
suggestions and submissions of kind readers like you!
So if you would like to e-mail me, PLEASE do so OFF-list using an e-mail
link from our website. (I cannot maintain subscriptions to all the lists to
which we make announcements.)
Hope you enjoy the site!
