The Ohio Lunatic Asylum

Assistant Physician, $600. Dr C.R. Pierce Junior Assistant Physician, $500.

The Ohio Lunatic Asylum occupies a beautiful lawn northeast of Columbus and
is about one mile distance from its public square. It is a stupendous pile
of brick ans stone work which presents an imposing appearance as seen from
every part of the State Capitol ans surrounding country. The structure faces
south. It is quadrangular, and measures 376 feet in front by 218 feet in the
rear. The buildings cover just one acre of ground, and inclose an area of
1864 yards. The main contre building is three stories high and an attic in
height above a basement., the wings and new buildings are three stories
high;and a walk through all its different galleries and passages exceeds one
mile. it contains rising 5,2000,000 bricks and something like 50,000 fett of
cut stone. The entire cost to the state was about $150,000, including work
done by the convicts of the Ohio Penitentiary., which constituted a large
item in this account.
There are three more paragraphs on the constuction and description of the
Asylum. The
Asylum was opened for the reception of patients in the fall of 1838. It
gives totals of patients treated. Males and Females. In the year of 1852 an
act was passed for two more asylums were built in the south and north part
of the state.
