Funeral services for Flois Eugene "Gene" Hughes, 81, who passed away Saturday,
March 24, 2001, were held Tuesday, March 27 at the Chapel of the Garden,
Rice Funeral Service in Claremore. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery
under the direction of Rice Funeral Service.

Mike Schroeder of the Blue Starr Church of Christ in Claremore officiated.
Those serving as casket bearers were: Brock Osten, Louis Osten, Joshua
Sten, Jonathan Osten, Dexter Osten and Zachary Osten. A poem was read by
Andria Meyers.

Gene Hughes was born February 2, 1920 at Tiawah, the first of six children
born to Floyd E. and Florence Seaman Hughes. He spent his lifetime in the
Tiawah community. When he was big enough, he like helping on the Vierheller
Farm doing various jobs. When he wasn't working he loved to fish. The only
way for his fishing to be even more enjoyable was to take along his nephews.
Since he didn't have children of his own, he especially loved and cared
for all his nieces and nephews. And during the summer months, he often
stayed at Rose Mary's house at Alluwe, and they spent endless hours fishing
together.

With life's simple pleasures being Gene's favorite, he appreciated many
things that most folks overlook. It would not be unusual to find him enjoying
the different birds as he fed them. He also enjoyed building wagons. If
it had wheels it wouldn't be long until Gene had turned them into a working
wagon. Everyone in the family was given one or two of Gene's handy items.
Many of his wagons continue to be put to good use by those who proudly
own them.

The greatest legacy Gene leaves with us is that he loved his family and
had no enemies.

He leaves all that knew him with a treasure of special memories. Those
loving family members who survive are: his sisters, Eugenia Thomas of Claremore,
Virginia Faught of Tiawah and Rose Mary Osten of Alluwe; numerous nieces
and nephews; his special friends, Bob and Betty Shelton of Claremore, Don
Mangrum of Tiawah and Phil McDrummond of Claremore. He was preceded in
death by: his parents, two brothers, J.B. and Floyd E. Hughes, Jr.
