Subject: [PACE-L] WARNING!!! BACKDOOR TROJAN VIRUS has been sent to 3 Pace Network people today!!!
Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 21:46:31 EDT

WARNING:

If you receive an email from someone in the Pace Network and it has an
attachment that says "Take a look to the attachment" at the bottom DO NOT
OPEN THE ATTACHMENT.  I received one from a pace network person and opened it
thinking it was genealogical info that I had requested and my computer got
infected.  I had to delete almost 20 .dll files and a couple of program files
because my NAV program couldn't inoculate it.

I received an email from another pace network person saying that I had given
her a computer virus and I had not even emailed her at all.  I don't know how
we are getting it but I just want everyone to beware.

Sincerely,

Leigh Downs

Nellie:

I didn't send you any emails.  I don't know how you got one from me unless it
went to all the pace network people.  I received the virus today from the
address:  . who is also in the Pace network.  It said "Take a
look to the attachment" and so I opened it thinking it was genealogical
information that I requested. I shut my computer down and ran my antivirus
program and continued working on line thinking it was taken care of.  It
ended up being the "Backdoor Trojan" which must be a bad one because my NAV
couldn't inoculate 20 of the files it infected and they were mostly .dll
files and a couple of program files.  I had to print the NAV activity report
to get the name of those files and manually delete each one.  I ran my scan
again and my computer is now clean.  But I don't know the significance of the
files I deleted or how their deletion will affect my computer.  I think I
should send a warning out to the Pace network people.

Leigh
