Subject: [PACE] Blair-Pace connection in Pittsylvania co, VA
Date: Fri, 11 Apr 2008 14:01:35 -0500
The following rather lengthy exchange may be of interest to some. I find one
statement confusing: “Edward Blair of Goochland Co., VA was the father of
one Mary Pace who married Henry Brown Blair.” Does the sender mean
father-in-law? I will ask.
Here is the initial message that I sent:

*Subject:* Blair-Pace?
My great grandfather was James Blair Pace, b. in 1807 in Pittsylvania Co,
VA. The Paces stem from a John Pace of Middlesex Co, VA, ca 1700, thence to
Goochland Co, VA, thence to Pittsylvania Co, VA ca 1800. I believe there was
a James Blair who was first president of William and Mary College.
Are you aware of any Blair-Pace connections that might explain my great
grandfather’s middlename?

The responses:
Hi Roy,
We know of, and have members who are researching, two Blair lines who
settled in the Pittslyvania Co, VA area in the early 1800s. Neither of these
lines has any provable connection with the Williamsburg, VA Blair line. This
Williamsburg line was politically very active during the Colonial American
period and Dr. Rev. James' (the same one as below) son, John, was a signer
of the Constitution for Virginia (Oh what "bragging rights" some researches
must /suffer /with!?!). We think some of these Pittslyvania Co. Blairs may
have intermarried with Paces from the area. I'll ask our BSGR Genealogist,
Charlotte Blair Stewart, to add a few comments to this note if she can find
any clues in our BSGR Genealogy database on a Blair - Pace relationship.
I am always glad to run into another surname-based genealogy society that
has gotten involved with the new, cutting-edge technology of DNA marker
matching. Here at the Blair Society for Genealogical Research, we are very
excited about this technology and have a very large program underway
including Blairs worldwide, both within and outside the BSGR.
Results so far have produced some surprises as well as confirmed some old
suspicions. If you would like to get a little more information on our DNA
program, please contact John A. Blair, BSGR Webmaster and Director of the
Blair DNA Project, at HYPERLINK

"mailto:"mailto:>. Additionally, if
you are interested in perusing your Pace - Blair connection, I would be
delighted to welcome you as a member of the BSGR, in our first 25 years, we
have had 1190 members, at one time or another. If you haven't done so
already, please check out the Blair Society at HYPERLINK

"http://www.blairsociety.org"http://www.blairsociety.org> and then click on
"Join the BSGR". If I can be of further help, please let me know.
We both hope this will be of some help to you and wish you much luck in your
quest for Pace DNA breakthroughs,
Best regards,
Bryce D. Blair

Dear Roy,
I am the genealogy Chair for the BSGR.
I have an rather large Blair/Pace group in Edmonson Co., KY. Edward Blair of
Goochland Co., VA was the father of one Mary Pace who married Henry Brown
Blair.
I am not sure when Edward left Goochland Co., but Mary was born in Goochland
in 1795 or 1801 (depends who you ask). He may also be the Edward Blair who
witnessed their marriage in 1824 in Warren Co., KY.
A. Raymond Blair founded the BSGR and he also founded the Edmonson Co., KY
historical society. He did so some research on the Pace family and it may
well be in the Edmonson Co. society library as I believe some of his Blair
research was placed there following his death. I don't know if his research
would answer any of your questions, but there may be a clue it somewhere.
You might go to their website and ask them if they have any of his Pace
data.
None of my Pittsylvania Co. Blairs were connected to the Pace family which
would explain your ancestor's middle name. Sorry I can't help you on that
one. He may be named for a minister or family friend, and/or the Blairs of
Edmonson Co., KY may have come from Goochland Co. also. A.
Raymond was never able to prove where in VA they lived, so who knows. If you
ever find a connection in VA, I would love to know about it, as it might
explain the relationships in Edmonson Co. too.
Best of luck with your serarch and DNA project Charlotte Blair Stewart Gen.
