The same story of the three brothers was passed along in my family as well.
That is why we never believed that Bruce Howard had it right in his book.

As it turns out, DNA evidence gives credence to the story. There are exact
matches between ancestors of William, the eldest brother (my line) and John,
the middle brother. We are looking for male descendents of Dempsey, the
youngest brother for further testing. Census records show they were all in
Clarke County for a time. William, my ancestor, is buried there. Most of
them moved on to MS, AR, and TX, etc.

As I understand it, DNA evidence also shows they are a distinct Pace line,
and could not have descended from the John of Middlesex and Richard Pace
lines.

Hope to see you at the reunion!

Miriam Nixon
