Subject: [PACK-L] E Brown Pack/Riley Armstrong murder of May 23, 1891

<<I'm reading the book "History of Summers County, WV" by Judge James H
Miller. Judge Miller takes it upon himself to paint a very nasty
picture of most of our ancestors. He must not have liked very many
people because almost every person in this book is made out to be a
criminal. Maybe they voted against him in some election.
On Page 819 he goes into detail about the killing of Riley Armstrong on
May 23, 1891. E. Brown Pack, son of Richard Pack, descendant of Samuel
Pack was indicted for the murder, sentenced to five years in the state
penitentiary and then pardoned by the Governor on September 12, 1891.
It seems that E. Brown Pack only had one hand as he had shot the other
one off some time previously, so they suggested this had been a case of
self defense.
Would anyone elaborate on this E. Brown Pack? I would like to know more
about the immediate family. Who were Richard Pack's parents? Am I
missing something? Have we discussed these people before? Was E. Brown
Pack married? Did he have children?
The book says he worked at the reservoir built by the Hinton Water Works
Company and that Armstrong was the town sergeant. Mr. Pack killed him
while he was milking his cow.>>
I wrote the above December 14, 1998 and have just figured out who E.
Brown Pack was. His name was Erastus B (Brown) Pack and he was the son
of Richard B Pack and Matilda (lnu). Richard was the son of Andrew Pack
& Eliza Jarrell.
Here's a 3 generation outline.
