The 1805 Thomas Pack family is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census in
Shoal Creek Township, Cherokee Co. NC. Living with the family is Elizabeth
Welch, bn 1812, status not indicated (but not listed as the wife of Thomas
Pack).
The above listed Stansburys were three brothers and sisters who
married three Pack brothers and sisters. James, Sarah and Solomon Stansbury,
Jr. were children of Solomon Stansbury, Sr. and wife Sarah of Fannin County,
Georgia.
Of the foregoing Pack-Stansbury families, 1833, Mary M. Pack md
Solomon Stansbury, Jr. This family lived in Fannin County Georgiak at the
time of the Civil War. The area was occupied by Federal Forces, with guerilla
bands, made up principally of baser elements of backwoodmen, who roamed the
mountains committing many murders to satisfy real or fancied wrongs. One of
these murders was of Solomon Stansbury, Jr. husband of 1833 Mary M. Pack,
daughter of 1805 Thomas Pack. Solomon Stansbury, Jr. was hanged on Sugar
Creek in Fannin CO, Georgia, by those roaming bands of guerrillas.
Elam Stewart was also hanged on Sugar Creek. Sydney McLeod was taken
from his home on Grassy Creek and killed on the farm of John Waters at
Epworth in Fannin County Georgia. McLeod left a wife and six children.
Clayton Fain attempted to flee his captors by leaping from Edward's Ferry,
but was found by guerrillas and shot to death.
The widow of Solomon Stansbury, Jr. lived until February 8, 1918. She
is buried at Union Baptist Church Cem. in Fannin CO, Georgia. Her tombstone
is inscribed, "I will be alreight." An unmarked adult's grave beside Mary's
is possibly that of her murdered husband.
Two of the most notorious leaders of guerrillas were William (Bill) Slate and
Capt. Gatewood. Gatewood killed William Kinser and Alonzo Jones, age 19.
Jack and Simon Orr were hanged at Greasy Creek, TN.
