To any and all interested in the Piatt, Pyatt, etc name:

I'd like to make a preliminary announcement about the 16th PIATT RESEARCHERS'
CONFERENCE. Arrangements are in the works to hold this conference the week of
June 18-24, 2000, at Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, Randolph Co, West Virginia.

As usual, we will be staying in dorm rooms. The fee for the rooms is $19.22
per person per night, including tax. A one time fee of $5.00 for linens will
be charged for those who want college linens. Of course, you can bring your
own linens if you wish. There will be no contract for breakfast, but
breakfast can be optional for those who want to go through the cafeteria line.
Breakfast will run around $5.00, more or less.

I am awaiting a contract from the college for the conference. The deposit on
the contract will be minimal and I will cover the deposit myself. I know many
of the regular attendees are subscribers to this list and might want to e-mail
their reservations right away so that I can have a preliminary count of how
many rooms will be needed.

For those who do not know about the conference, let me explain briefly. For
15 years a group of researchers has met for a week each summer to research the
Piatt name. We have met in locations ranging from New York to Virginia,
Indiana to the District of Columbia, always in a location where Piatts used to
live. We always stayed on college campuses to keep down costs and to
facilitate research and meeting facilities. We spend our days "in the field"
researching court records, library and historical center holdings and
cemeteries, and interviewing persons who might know something of the name or
the history of the area. In the evenings we meet to share our findings.
Minutes of the meetings are kept and distributed to those attending.

When the Piatt Family Newsletter was published, our findings were contributed
to that forum. We still hope to publish our new findings via this list and by
current and future websites.

I know I speak for the regulars when I urge anyone who has not joined us in
the past to consider doing so this coming June. We are amiamble and certain
of us can ferret out the most charming restaurants.

Many Piatt lines have been traced back to the point of being only one or two
generations removed from New Jersey. By meeting in this area of West Virginia
we are hoping to uncover that vital link that will make the connection to one
or more of the Piatts in New Jersey in the mid to late 1700s.

For instance, from the postings to the Hampshire Co WV list I've learned that
MANY New Jersey families settled there before 1800. Cornelius Peyatt bought
land on Beaver Run (now Mineral Co) in 1792 and sold it in 1796. The very
name "Cornelius" points to New Jersey. To whom does he connect? And who was
the William who also appeared on the tax lists there briefly? Are these the
same people who came to Ohio in the early 1800s?

Further, there are questions concerning the origins of the Peyatts in Nicholas
Co (W)VA as well Piatts in Preston and Pocahontas Co (W) VA in 1840 and in
Pendleton Co in 1830.

Elkins put us within in reach of all these counties plus the library at West
Virginia University in Morgantown and the state archives in Charleston.

So, please consider joining us for this 16th annual conference on the Piatt
name. If you have further questions, please e-mail me.
