This William Piatt was born about 1790 in VA according to Volume 8 of the
Piatt Family Newsletter. He married, as his first wife, Catherine Glass about
1812 in either OH or IN. He died after 1850 in Crawford Co MO.
Benjamin, oldest child of William and Catherine Glass Piatt, was born about
1813 in Clark Co OH and died in MO. He married Avis Eggers on 19 Aug 1833 in
Putnam Co IN.
The parents of William are not known at this time but he was born at such a
time that he cannot be far removed from his probable ancestry in New Jersey.
The names William and Benjamin are oft used among Piatt families, and as such,
only further the confusion.
Looking to the Glass and Eggers names we find this information:
The book INDEX TO NEW JERSEY WILLS, 1689-1890, by Ronald Vern Jackson shows
Eggers families in Warren and Hudson Counties in New Jersey. Also found in
the NJ wills are possible variations on the name: Agers, Aggers, Eggens,
Egert, Eager, Edgar & Eckert. Glass families are found in Bergen, Essex,
Hudson, Passaic and Warren Co in NJ, with the earliest being James Glass whose
will was probated in Essex Co NJ in 1819.
Glass families played a part in the history of the Opequon, an area 5 miles
southwest of Winchester, Frederick Co VA. In addition HISTORIAL RECORDS OF
OLD FREDERICK AND HAMPSHIRE COUNTIES, VIRGINIA, by Wilmer Kerns has numberous
references to Glass families. CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTCH-IRISH SETTLEMENT IN
VIRGINIA, by Lyman Chalkley mentins Glass families in Augusta Co VA and
surrounding counties.
While Piatts were also in Hampshire, Frederick, and Augusta Counties VA the
answers to our questions may lie in tracking the associated names back into
New Jersey.
