I received your message concerning James A. Piatt. He is my great great
Grandfather. His son John Bear Piatt, my great grandfather, kept a journal
apparently for most of his adult life born Nov. 11 1805 and died June 18,
1893. Great Grandfather's Journal was hand-written, but contains much
material of all the Piatt's he came in contact with during his life of
wandering, and of course much detailed information of his own family.

I transcribed this journal about 10 years ago and my oldest son is now the
custodian of the original journal.

Reading from his journal, he says, " When my father (James) went into the
army in 1812, he took his son William with him to New York and apprenticed
him to a printer where he learned the printing trade.....He was stationed at
one time on an island in New York harbor where he had a command on Ellis
Island, where my Mother visited him occasionally. Later speaking of his
father's military career he said,"He soon got a place as a recruiting
officer which seemed to put him in his element. In mustering men for
soldiers, paying them the bounty money, marching them to New York and
hunting up more was the business. This was soon changed for more active
duties in the Army." Which is about all he mentions about his father's
military career.

John Bear Piatt, spent quite a lot of time on and off until his father's
death working and traveling with his father and talks a good deal about
these times

I will look up what information I have as to his death. Maybe this little
bit of information will help you.
