Sorry to clip Caral's last name of Bennett from my reference in a previous post.
Thank you, Caral, for posting this Lack Township information to the list. I
have not seen a reference to a William Pyate in Lack Township before. An
adult WILLIAM PYATE who was there in 1769 would have to have been born by 1751
at the latest, I would think. The WILLIAM PIATT listed as a son of JACOB and
MARY HULL PIATT was born about 1716 and was said to have gone to Westchester
Co NY. But nothing further is known of this WILLIAM so it could be a possibilty.
JACOB, son of JACOB and MARY HULL PIATT, is not listed as having a son WILLIAM.
But JACOB, son of JACOB and MARY HULL PIATT, and JACOB, son of JACOB and
grandson of JACOB and MARY HULL PIATT, or one of those two JACOBs, could be
responsible for the other two records in Lack Township.
Tax records show:
Lack Township (now in Mifflin Co PA)
1768, Piat, Jacob: 2h, 2c, 2sh; 100 acres unwarranted, 6 cleared
1769, Pyat, Jacob: 1h, 2c, 0sh; 100 acres l (leased?), 12 cleared
1770, Pyat, Jacob: 2h, 2c, 4sh; 100 acres l (leased?), 8 cleared
Fannet Township (now in Franklin Co PA)
1768 no Piatts
1769 no Piatts
1770 Pyat, Jacob: 400 acres warranted, 10 cleared
The WILLIAM BRICE survey for 291.5 acres of land, dated 5 Jun 1767, included
the present town of Waterloo on PA Rt 75 in Mifflin Co PA. This 1767 survey
shows the neighbor downstream on the northeast to be JACOB PYATH. Although
the name is PYATH, I don't see how it is possible to be other than JACOB PYATT.
By the time this PYATT parcel of land was surveyed on 14 October 1786, it was
in the possession of JAMES HARVEY.
A REsurvey dated 26 April 1789 shows that the land of JAMES HARVEY was
bordered downstream on the northeast by that of WILLIAM ARBUCKLE. This
REsurvey states that ARBUCKLE's warrant was dated 4 February 1755. Therefore,
ARBUCKLE would have been a neighbor of JACOB PYATH/PYATT.
The road that JACOB PYATT and WILLIAM ARBUCKLE would have been supervising in
1772 would have been the then course of PA Rt 75.
I have copies of the three surveys, BRICE, HARVEY (PYATH), and ARBUCKLE, and
have found that, believe it or not, the shapes of the original surveys can be
found on the present day topographical quadrangle for the area. Forested
land, cleared land, and fence rows show on the present day map and the shapes
they make are almost identical to the old surveys. I hope to get back someday
to complete some deed research on these parcels.
I have to wonder which JACOB was which above. Was the JACOB taxed on sheep in
Lack Township the one who went to Washington Co PA? When THOMAS THORNBURG was
befriended by that JACOB PYEATTE in Washington Co PA, THOMAS wove some wool on
JACOB's loom. (Wouldn't we like to know what happened to that loom?)
Was the JACOB in Fannet Township the Indian trader as listed many times in the
Pennsylvania Archives? Someone..."came over Tuscarora Mountain in a howling
rain, passing JACOB PYATTs on the left..."
In this area where the Piatts were at such an early date we just do some more digging.
