Again, I'm quoting from Louise MARTIN MOHLER's book - prob more than you EVER
wanted to know about MARTINs... but some ARE PIATT/ PYATT descendants,
anyway. ;)
"Jonathan MARTIN had three wives and 15 known children. He married his
first wife about the time the new church was formed (in Middlesex Co NJ) and
it was recorded as 1706. That wife was ELIZABETH DUNHAM, d/o the new pastor,
Rev. Edmund and his wife Mary (BONHAM) DUNHAM. Elizabeth died four years
later at the age of 21.
In 1713 Jonathan married MARTHA RUNYON, d/o John & Ann Elizabeth (DUNN)
RUNYON. She died 7 years later at age 27.
In 1722 he married DINAH PYATT d/o Jacob & Mary (HULL) PYATT. Both
tombstones for Dinah and Jonathan were unearthed in 1971-72 winter when
digging up an old Nike missile at the old Hadley Airport. This airport is
rather famous since that is where the American Air-Mail system had its
beginning. The tombstones were eventually taken to the METLAR House, 1281
River Rd., Piscataway. Mrs. Cora Lee ROMANO was kind enough to me a
beautiful rubbing of Jonathan's stone. It was her husband who rescued the
stones on that winter day. It reads, 'In Memory of Jonathan MARTIN - Father
of Jacob MARTIN Esq - who deceased July -- 1768 in the 82d year of his age.'
Evidently, Jacob was the one who purchased the stone. It is a little
amusing that as the father of 15 children, his son Jacob had his name on the
monument. The stone for Dinah was the same design. A third stone for a
young dtr. was also uncovered: (dtr) Dinah died at age 18 in 1794, d/o of
Jacob."
