Surname: Piatt, Pyatt

I was wondering if ayone else has found where the name Piatt had switched
to Pyatt? My g-g-grandfather was Benjiman Pyatt but in 1864 his son Charles
signed his mothers pension request as Charles Pyatt and everything I have
found after this is spelled Pyatt including his mothers obit. Is this common
and which way do I search Pi or Py. Thanks for any help Dan
