According to the 1870 Census Index for Iowa ot Ancestry.com, there is a
listing for the following:

Piatt, Allen 1870 Dallas County IA on page 540 in Colfax Township

If Allen Piatt, was your Benjamin's father, this might be where you would
need to look to find birth info. It at least bears looking at. :)
