I think definately the key here is opportunity. You saw a handful of people
at church once a month, and your neighbors at the occasional picnic or trip
to town/trading post (if that). They really didn't see anyone but relatives
on a regular basis. When a young man is going across to a neighbors' to
check out his daughters, I'm sure any other unmarried young men are going to
go along as well. And, from my experience, the more time you spend with
someone the more you feel like they are 'the one'. Especially, if you're not
seeing a whole lot of any other young people. I am remembering back to
summer vacation when the boys that I ran into at the local groceryy/feed
store started looking better and better as the summer wore on (and the
longer it had been since I had seen anyone else for comparison). I can
imagine that if you multiply that a few times and have siblings pulling for
you to 'join the family' - it would almost be inevitable that it's going to
