We are dealing with two or possibly three William
Piatt-Pyatt-Peepyat-Peatt-Peyat.
I researched some of these deeds from 1991 to 1993.
In 1777 there was a William Pyatt (therefore born probably 1755 or before)
that purchased 150 acres in Frederick County, VA . Names mentioned were
Littler's Run, Licks Run and Opeckon Creek. I would assume this is Clarke
County, VA today. I also feel this was in an area south of Brucetown today,
on or near Rt. 761.
This William sold this property in 1802 and died in 1804. There was quite
some CARTER families in the area. William left his estate to Sarah, Rebecca
and Rachel, daughters of John Donaldson, an Innkeeper. William had cared for
these three girls earlier.
Cornelius Peyatt-Piatt then shows up in 1791 on the Hampshire tax list.
In 1796 William Peepyat (Pyatt-Piatt-Peyatt-Peatt) purchases 50 acres on Mill
Creek therefore probably born before 1774. On the West and north sides of
this property was Benjamin Parker with 327 acres. This William Piatt
property had to be located on the South side of present day Rt. 50, west of
Romney and probably slightly east of Burlington. The Frederick Finks name
was mentioned in both of the above two properties.
William Piatt who married Mary or Mary Margaret Smith in 1814 does not seem
to fit to be the same person as William Peepyat, unless it was a second
marriage, according to the date of birth we have for this William.
In 1991 I was told by an area historian that the original land warrants and
surveys existed but he no longer knew where they were at that time. In 1993
I was again told by another historian near Keyser that they did exist in the
near past, but now unknown. The supposed reason for this was due to the
breakup of the Historical Society, who had them originally. They were trying
to locate them so that they could be placed with the Burlington Library.
If anyone has questions pertaining to this and would like to further the
research, please inquire and I may be able to add some tidbit.
Dick Piatt, PA.
