For Anita,
Sometimes I think we might as well play "Pin the Piatts on the Map." This
blindfolded game might work as well as anything else. And the repetition of
names throughout the various lines helps nothing but confusion.
I don't think that ELIZABETH HANNAH PIATT ARMFIELD had any connection to the
Piatts of Monroe Co OH other than to be quite a distant cousin that they
didn't know. I looked in my e-files and found a posting from way back in 2002
that I'd like to include at the end here.
My SPECULATION is that ELIXABETH HANNAH PIATT's family originated in New
Jersey, migrated to Virginia and also that part of Virginia that is now West
Virginia (Augusta, Rockbridge, Rockingham areas and Hampshire and Mineral in
WV), to Ohio (Stark, Franklin, Knox, Seneca Co) and on to IN. We know that
the family of the younger MOSES PIATT and wife ELIZABETH PARKER did move from
Seneca Co OH to northern IN. In addition, since the original posting of the
clip below, the name of MARTIN SMITH has been found in militia records for
Hunterdon Co NJ during Revolutionary times.
As mentioned in the clip below, if we could find a sale of land in Ohio by a
MOSES and JANE PIATT we would be back on the trail of these people.
Discussion of this speculation is welcome. We've got to keep digging.
<<Congratulations to Anita and her relatives for obtaining and posting the
information about ELIZABETH HANNAH PIATT ARMFIELD which gave Hannah's parents
as MOSES PIATT and JANE SMITH of Virginia.
This would make a second PIATT/SMITH connection in Virginia, the other being
the marriage of WILLIAM PEATT [sic] and MARY SMITH on 17 Nov 1814 in Augusta
Co VA. The marriage record gives MARY SMITH as the daughter of MARTIN SMITH.
It would be an understatement to say that we have to wonder if these two sets
of people were closely related. It might help to begin looking at Smith
families in Virginia and New Jersey.
I notice that HANNAH's birthplace is given as Canton, Stark Co OH, 1828.
Although that is possible, by 1830 two MOSES PIATTs were listed in the census
records as living in different places:
1830, Franklin Co OH, Truro Twp (near Port Columbus airport)
Moses Piatt
1 male 50-60
2 males 20-30
1 female 40-50
2 females 15-20
1 female 10-15
2 females 5-10
1 female under 5
neighbors were George W Calp and William McComb
(could this be a three generational family?)
1830, Seneca Co OH, Adams Twp
Moses Pyatt [sic] (appears in one index as Moses Ryatt)
1 male 20-30
1 male 10-15
1 male under 5
1 female 20-30
1 female 10-15
neighbors were Jacob Whiteman, John Petticord, and John Elder
It would appear that the Seneca Co OH MOSES PYATT would not be the family of
Hannah's parents. There is no 2 year old female. I believe a county history
refers to this family as that of MOSES and ELIZABETH PARKER PIATT later of
northern Indiana. Deed records of Seneca Co show that all of the sales made
by this Moses were with a wife Elizabeth.
If we could find a deed record of MOSES and JANE or JANE PIATT selling land in
Franklin Co OH we would have reasonable proof that the 1830 Franklin Co family
is the right one to be the family of HANNAH.
If anyone has access to Ancestry.com's databases or another such source, could
you make a quick check to see if any land records are available for Stark or
Franklin Co OH? I don't believe birth records were kept anywhere in Ohio
until 1867 so that avenue of research for Hannah's birth is out.>>
