To all those that wrote me regarding the above family and my research visit
to Augusta Co., VA. on April 18, 2002.
I was hoping to find a deed or Will for Martin Smith, but no such thing is on
file in the courthouse at Staunton, VA.
Therefore, I went to the Handley Library in Winchester, VA.
Here is the only thing I could find in the census index, but due to only
having one day to spend there I did not have time to research the census
itself.
The 1810 census index does contain two entries for Martin Smith. One appears
on page 382 in Augusta County. The other appears on page 593 in Frederick
County.
Nothing appears in the 1820 census index.
A Martin Smith does appear in the 1830 Augusta County census index on page
041 in the Northern District.
A Martin Smith does appear in the 1850 Augusta County census index on page
228 in the Second District.
There is a Martin Smith appearing in the 1783-1786 census for Greenbriar Co.,
VA.
There are other Martin Smiths' appearing in Bedford Co., VA.
If anyone has time to research any of this, possibly it would produce further
information. I was hoping for a deed to see where the family was and how
close they may have been to the Piatt family.
Dick, PA.
