While researching in northern Indiana last week I came across a document which comes as close to being the perfect genealogical document as I have seen. It concerns the children of WARREN and ELIZABETH LEE(?) PIATT of Noble Co IN. Would that we could find such a document for each of our lines.

Apparently JAMES D PIATT (and maybe in collaboration with his brother ALEXANDER as indicated by other deeds) was acquiring the home place from the other heirs. Other quit claim deeds establish the residences of some of the other heirs:

Emery and Elizabeth Piatt Shaul [sic], St Joseph Co MI
Alva and Josephine Piatt Billman, Noble Co IN
Isabel Piatt Osterhout, Kent Co MI
Henry and Catherine Piatt McHenry, Kent Co MI
Hugh H Piatt, Noble Co IN
Calvin and Nancy Jane Piatt Watkins, Noble Co IN

WARREN PIATT bought the land described above from the State of Indiana on 18 October 1853 (Noble Co Deed Book 10, page 385). The land is north across the road and just a little east of the church cemetery in Cosperville (first called Springfield) where his son JOHN H PIATT is buried with a Civil War marker which indicates that JOHN H served with Co B, 88th Indiana Infantry. There are no dates on the marker. JOHN H PIATT and his wife sold land on 3 Nov 1874 but both were dead by the time of the quit claim deed of MARY ELLEN PIATT in 1880. Next to JOHN's marker is that of his wife, CATHERINE STEINBARGER PIATT, 1843-1877, and in the same row is a marker for their daughter LEANA PIATT, d/o JH & C PIATT, d 12 Nov 1869, 8mo, 15d. Also in the same row is a marker for WILLIAM PIATT, 1867-1877. If this is a son of JOHN H and CATHERINE, that fact is yet to be established.

A book of Noble Co cemetery inscriptions states that a transcript of the Cosperville Cemetery done by the DAR in the 1930s lists ELIZABETH PIATT as being buried in the same cemetery giving her death date as 9 Apr 1881 being 65y, 3m, 19d. (By the printing of the other book in 1996 no stone for ELIZABETH could be found.) If ELIZABETH is there it would not be difficult to suspect that her husband WARREN would be in the same cemetery, too, but as yet there is no proof.
