While in Indiana for research last week, I was able to stop at the courthouse in Tipton Co IN to look for information on WILLIAM PIATT and LEWIS SHORT. I did not find the land patent you mentioned for 1 April 1856, but I did find four ordinary warranty deeds involving WILLIAM PIATT.

Tipton Co Deed Book C, page 287
dated 31 October 1851, recorded 12 Dec 1851
WILLIAM PEATT [sic] from LEWIS SHORT
for $40, NW Cor NE, Section 31, Township 22, Range 6, 40 ac

Tipton Co Deed Book G, page 367
dated 8 September 1856, recorded 10 September 1856
WILLIAM PEATT [sic] to J M HUNT
for $400, NE of NW, Section 31, Township 22, Range 6, 40 ac

Tipton Co Deed Book G, page 394
dated 29 September 1856, recorded 29 September 1856
J M HUNT to WILLIAM PEATT [sic]
for $400, NE of NW, Section 31, Township 22, Range 6, 40 ac

Tipton Co Deed Book G, page 511
dated 20 October 1856, recorded 31 October 1856
WILLIAM PEATT to RICHARD GASAWAY (of White Co IN)
for $600, NE of NW, Section 31, Township 22, Range 6, 40 ac

Although always indexed as PEATT the deeds spell the name PIAT, PIATT and PEATT. Around 1914 upon a subsequent sale of this land an affidavit was filed whereby a man named MARSHALL swore that WILLIAM PIAT, PIATT, and PEATT were all the same man and also that J M HUNT and JAMES MADISON HUNT were the same man.

The consideration in these four deeds increased from $40 to $400 to $400 to $600. I cannot explain the sale to J M Hunt and the purchase from him the same month.

Although the description of the land in the first deed is written differently, I believe the four deeds concern the same parcel of land which the recorders office indicated was at or near the village of Curtisville.

When WILLIAM PEATT was the grantor his wife LYDIA was also a party to the deed.

There are many WILLIAM PIATTs but not so many couples WILLIAM and LYDIA, fortunately. I have a record of a marriage of a WILLIAM PIATT and LYDIA SMALLMAN, 28 Mar 1830, by Abraham Stagg JP, Franklin Co OH, Book 2, page 245, as listed in EARLY MARRIAGE BONDS OF OH, 1803-1864, (Franklin Co), DAR typescript (1938).

The record also indicates that "JOHN PIATT, brother of WILLIAM, says his father has given his consent for his marriage to LYDIA SMALLMAN and that her maiden name was WAGGONER, that she married JOHN SMALLMAN who has since died leaving her a widow. Witness: Lyne Starling, Jr, 27 Mar 1830."

It might be more than coincidental that another couple married in Franklin Co OH 6 years later turned up in neighboring Hamilton Co IN in the 1850 census. On 4 April 1836 in Franklin Co IN, ANN PIETT m PETER CASE by Alexander Cameron JP, Book 3, page 197 (indexed as PRATT). On 22 Dec 1851 in Hamilton Co IN, PETER CASE made an affidavit that (ELIZABETH) HANNAH PIATT was a resident of Hamilton Co. (HANNAH did not appear in the PETER CASE household in the 1850 census.) This affidavit enabled HANNAH to marry ISAAC ARMFIELD on 24 December 1851.

At the Noblesville IN library I found "Tipton Co IN Marriage Records and Genealogical Data, 1855-1870" by Marietta F Henry. The book revealed that LEWIS SHORT m LISHA ANN HIGH on 19 Jun 1851. Ms Henry speculates that "LEWIS may have been the "Young" SHORT, 32, s/o MICHAEL and NANCY SHORT, 1850 census; believe LISHA d before 1860; 3 SHORT children lived with HENRY and MARTHA HIGH in 1860." And,

LEWIS SHORT m SARAH N KNOTT, 1 Oct 1865. Per Ms Henry, "Possibly this was same man as listed above; LEWIS was not listed in 1860 nor 1870 Tipton Co census."

And notice how cleverly WILLIAM and LYDIA PIATT slipped in and out of Tipton Co IN avoiding the census while there.

[Should anyone want to obtain copies of the deeds, be aware of a descrepency in paging concerning Deed Book G. Although the books on the shelf are perfectly fine, regulations demand that copies be made from microfilm or microfiche of the "original records." For Deed Book C this was not a problem. However, for Deed Book G, the book on the shelf is not the one that was microfiched. The information is the same, but the page numbers are different, as well as the handwriting and drawings indicating seals. Deed #2 was found on page 367 of the book and page 418 of the microfiche. Deed #3 was found on page 394 of the book and on page 446 of the microfiche. Deed #4 was found on page 511 of the book and on page 564 of the microfiche. I speculate that Deed Book G, and maybe others, was recopied from the original, by hand, at some previous date and that the hand copy is what is on the shelf, but that the original original book was the book that was microfiched. I discussed this!
with the clerk in the office but I'm not sure was understood at the time. However, I believe the clerk is dedicated and that she will figure out the problem in time. Deed Book G on microfiche does have it's own index which is how I solved the problem of page descrepencies.]

So that is what I found in Tipton Co IN, but unfortunately it does not answer the question of any relationship between WILLIAM PIATT and LEWIS SHORT.
