A bit-distant, but PIATT/ PYATT related family comment -- YES, this is
definitely a pattern from "the past."
Mary Ann HESS married in Jan 1854, Marion Co OH, to Jephtha MARTIN (b.
1834), gr'son of Pyatt MARTIN (who was gt'son of Dinah PIATT/ PYATT)

Jephtha and Mary Ann (b. 1832 PA) had at least 9 children born betw 1855
- 1875. In 1860, they were in Marion Co OH, 1867 in Hardin Co OH, and by
1877 in Neosho Co KS...
*** ...most or all of this time, Mary Ann's younger sister, Rebecca (Aunt
Becky) HESS (b. 1843) appeared in census records living with them.

To complete the story of this younger sister...
...after Mary Ann's death in June 1896, Jephtha married Rebecca in Oct
1897, Carthage MO.
Guess this made an unmarried gal living with a widower, "respectable,"
right?! (^.^)
