Subject: [PIATT] Clinton Co IN records
Date: Sat, 10 Aug 2002 16:58:01 +0000
I was able to cover a lot of territory on the trip to
Indiana last week and on Friday Jo and Beth Lauer and I
went to Clinton Co IN to see if there was anything we
might have overlooked in previous research.
The subject of the research was JAMES PIATT who married
MARY DONAHUE in Augusta Co VA and who lived with son
PHILIP PIATT in Jasper Co IN in 1860 according to the
census. JAMES PIATT died in Clinton Co IN in 1871. JAMES
PIATT _should_ be buried in Oak Cemetery in Kirklin
Township, Clinton Co IN, with his son PHILIP, Philip's
wife LUVINA GALBREATH, and CLARA PIATT and HOMER PIATT,
the latter two adult children of PHILIP and LUVINA.
Everyone mentioned in this paragraph is buried at Oak Hill
except for JAMES. Instead of a War of 1812 marker for
JAMES, there is a War of 1812 marker (with no dates) for
CLAUDIUS PIATT, a man who hasn't been found anywhere to my
knowledge after 1820 in Virginia. A puzzle to be solved.
I searched deeds to 1889 and was surprised to find no
deeds concerning JAMES PIATT or PHILIP PIATT at all
Clinton Co IN.
The only record concerning the estate of JAMES PIATT was
when PHILIP went to court, listed JAMES' final expenses
which PHILIP had paid, and asked for reimbursement. The
court agreed that PHILIP should be paid $50, but from what
source? JAMES had no assets it was claimed. This record
has been published in he Piatt Family Newsletter which
stated that the original record file was stored in the
attic of the Clinton County Courthouse. We were happy to
find that at least some of the records files from the
courthouse attic have been transferred to the genealogy
department at the Frankfort Public Library. This record
was one of them.
In driving around Kirklin we discovered a very old
cemetery in town with one Revolutionary War marker, two
War of 1812 markers and several Civil War markers. It
would have been easier to bury JAMES PIATT in this
cemetery than to carry him a mile or two out to Oak Hill.
But there is no proof and no indication of this.
PHILIP PIATT, the oldest man in the county, died at his
home in Kirklin in 1919. Philip's son HOMER PIATT died at
his home in Kirklin in 1939. We wondered where this house
was and was it still standing. The next day I checked the
1930 census for Kirklin and found:
Roll #581, stamped page #173B
165/177 PLIATTE (or so it looks), CLARA, head, $300,
female, white, 72 S, IN VA KY (no occupation)
, HOMER, bro,
male, white, 63 D, IN VA KY (farm labor)
They lived on Washington Street, second family after Ohio
Street. Does this mean that HOMER was divorced?
The 1870 census for Clinton Co was never extracted for the
Piatt Family Newsletter. In the meantime, it has been
printed and was available at the library in Frankfort.
