For Laverne, (8/10/02)
No deed was found for James Piatt in Clinton Co. was because he owned
property in Jasper Co., IN. I do agree that James may be in the old cemetery
in town which I also visited some years ago. But, I feel he should be in Oak
Hill unless there was no room left on the James Piatt plot in town or
otherwise why would they have buried Claudius Piatt out there in Oak Hill and
BETWEEN Philip's two children!
Regarding the Philip Piatt house in Kirklin, it was standing yet when I
visited probably around 1985.
Regarding son Homer Piatt, yes, he was at least separated from his wife but I
did not find a record for a divorce. He was living in Indianapolis before
coming back to Kirklin. At that time he was with his wife.
Why James and Philip were not in the 1870 census, I never could find a reason.
Again, when I visited a few times out to the Kirklin area, I was able to find
the caretaker that held the Oak Hill cemetery records and visited with him.
As a matter of fact he was so concerned that he had me drive him down to the
cemetery to prove to him that Philip and family was buried in that part of
the cemetery. He claimed that the back section where they are buried did
belong to a separate cemetery and was the oldest part and the records for
that part were missing as they had tried to find them numerous times. He was
an elderly gentleman and took care of that cemetery for years so they just
felt they should take care of the old cemetery along with their front section
even though they had never seen records for the old back part. But, he was
concerned and told me he was going to check into it again and if he ever
found anything he was going to write me, but I never heard from him.
Dick Piatt, PA.
