Subject: [PIATT] Laverne 8/10/02 More on Clinton Co., IN.

I did some additional research on this matter. James Piatt may not be buried
in Clinton Co., IN. but in the cemetery near their farm in Jasper Co., IN.
Mary Donahue, his wife, died ca 1860-61 and she could just be up there.
I checked with the National Archives regarding the application for a
tombstone for Claudius Piatt and they had no records. The other possibility
would be to check the local person that puts the flags for veterans at the
cemetery, they might know something as they do have quite some records for
where they place the flags.
Regarding Philip Piatt owning a house or property in Kirklin, IN. Yes, he
rented a house for many years but purchased one between 1900 and 1910. The
house was still standing in 1985 when I visited. It was on Pike St. at the
corner of Pike and Washington Sts. The house was sold in 1940 to Cliffa
Brandenburg, Clara's niece.
She then sold it in 1944 to James Shaeffer. Prior to 1866, the rest of
Philip's property transfers were in Jasper Co., IN.
Another thing to be checked yet is this. On Rt. 38 on the east side before
entering Kirklin there is a Bogan Cemetery. There is no Piatt burials in
there to my knowledge but there is one Jacob HEFFNER. He could be related to
Philip who had the middle name HEFFNER.
Regarding where the money came from the James Piatt estate to be able to pay
son Philip the costs of his father's last expenses, I would assume he took it
to court in order to have it taken from his father's (James) War Pension.
Otherwise if the check came shortly after his death, they would have had to
return it.
Regarding the family 265, Ross township, Clinton Co., IN. census, Margaret
was the widow of David Piatt, formerly Margaret Troxell. John H. and
Elizabeth Piatt Bennett were two of the children of David and Margaret
(Troxell) Piatt.
Dick Piatt, PA.
