Robin --
I received the Kearney charts yesterday. So much information!
Thanks for sending them.
Below is what I have on the first Piatts. The reason you are "dazed
and confused" is because no one has really figured out all of the
relationships among the first Piatts. In my list below, I have
eliminated a few supposed Piatt progeny who appear on some lists, but
for whom I have never found any evidence that indicates relationship
to Rene Piatt and Elizabeth Sheffield.
Cautions: Most Piatt researchers now consider John, the sheriff and
father of the 5 Revolutionary brothers, to have been a son of Jacob
(A), but I don't think there is any firm evidence, and instead John
might have been a son of James (D). Likewise, most Piatt researchers
consider John Pyatt, the weaver of Chester Co. PA, who was about the
same age as sheriff John, to have been English in background and
unrelated to the New Jersey Piatts; but again there is no firm
evidence, and depending which family (Jacob's or James's) sheriff John
came from, weaver John might have come from the other. Orra Monnette
guessed that Samuel was a posthumous son of Thomas (C), but it cannot
be ruled out that Samuel was a son of James (D), or even of Jacob (A).
My list suggests that the Francis Piatt named in a deed with James (D)
in 1701 was actually a sister, Frances, and that she was the Frances
who married Isaac Doty, but this is only my guess. The list also
suggests that the female Piatt, whom John Doty married as his second
wife, was either Rachel d/o Jacob, or Susannah d/o James, based on
their ages, but no evidence has surfaced to determine whether either
of these possibilities is correct.
Hopefully, more digging by Piatt researchers will disclose information
to resolve some of these maybes.
