Subject: [PIATT] old Piatts in 1880

I'm a little slow on the uptake these days but finally realized that the 1880
census is online at

http://www.familysearch.org

A spelling specific search for Piatt turned up 1045 hits. My husband's
grandfather was #1024, of course, but at least the census taker caught him. A
search for Pyatt produced 652 hits, for Pyeatte 38. I forget how many hits for
Pyeatt, Pyott, Piott, Piate, etc. A spelling specific search keeps other P300
names like Pate from turning up.

I thought it might be of interest to list here the individuals I found who were
born before 1800. There were seven, six sturdy women and one lucky man. They
are:

REBECCA PIATT, age 90, b VA about 1790, single, white, father born PA, mother
born PA, in household of DAVID REED, relationship to head of household "other,"
enumerated in Washington Twp, Morrow Co OH. I have to wonder if this lady was
really the widow of John Piatt of Montgomery Co OH. That Rebecca, widow of John,
was 65 in the 1850 census making her born about 1785 in VA. There are no Piatt
connections to Morrow Co so it's a mystery why Rebecca was there. The Taylors
reported at the latest conference that they had discovered Rebecca's grave in
Washington Township, had found her in the census with the Reed family, but found
no connection. Any more information on Rebecca is welcome.

JANE PIATT, age 83, b OH about 1797, widow, white, father born Ireland, mother
born Ireland, in household of PETER STEWART, relationship to head of household
mother-in-law, enumerated in Colona, Henry Co IL. I would question her birth in
OH at that time. That's extremely early with settlers, mostly squatters, only in
the southeastern portion of the state. Although admitted to the Union in 1803,
the state wasn't completely "secure" until 1814.

KATHERINE PIATT, age 84, b MD about 1796, widow, white, father born Maryland,
mother born Bavaria, head of household but in same house with son JOHN P PIATT,
enumerated in Greene Township, Monroe Co OH. This lady is my husband's great-
great-grandmother, widow of JAMES PIATT JR. She is most often found as CATHERINE
(MOFFET) PIATT.

JOHN PYATT, age 83, b (W)VA about 1797, farmer, married, white, father born NJ,
mother born NJ, head of household self, enumerated in Watertown, Washington Co
OH. This man was a brother to JAMES PIATT JR mentioned as the deceased husband
of Katherine above. He was a War of 1812 veteran and married to ELIZABETH KEEZY
who was still living in 1880 as well. I doubt that John's parents were both born
in NJ, but if not, it shows that the person in John's household who spoke to the
census taker knew that the family origins were there. Interesting.

RACHEL PYATT, age 87, b NJ about 1793, single, white, mother born NJ, father born
NJ, in household of EDWARD G PYATT, relationship to head of household sister,
enumerated in Clinton, Essex Co NJ. I haven't a clue as to who this lady is.
The town of Clinton is in Hunterdon Co NJ. Dick, is there a Clinton Township in
Essex Co?

CHARLOTT PYATT, aged 105, b VA about 1775, widowed, black, mother born VA, father
born VA, in household of ROBERT PYATT, relationship to head of household mother,
enumerated in Jackson, Amelia, VA.

ANN PIOTT, aged 90, b VA about 1790, widowed, white, mother born VA, father born
VA, in household of JONAH NIXON, relationship to head of household mother,
enumerated in E D 56, Loudoun VA. ANN NIXON was a widow when she married JOHN W
PYOTT, I believe, as his second wife. She is buried in the cemetery across the
road from Woodburn Plantation in Loudoun Co VA.

I may have missed some of the old folks so take a look yourself and post more
when you find them. I could have missed making a search of other variations of
spelling of the Piatt name, too.

As a somewhat humorous note to those who attended the last conference and
remember my chase of the Piatts of northern Indiana, in the 1880 census I found

HUGH PIATT, aged 24, b CANADA about 1856, single, white, farm labor, mother born
CANADA, father born CANADA, in the household of AYRES B RAYMOND, enumerated in
Comstock, Kalamazoo, MI. Don't be misled by this claim of Canadian origins.
This HUGH PIATT was a son of WARREN and ELIZABETH LEE PIATT, born in Noble Co IN.
This census came between his divorce from Jennie Dohm and his troubles on the
streets of Rome City IN in the 1890s. It shows the extent, perhaps, of his
attitude toward family. Fibbing to the census taker was to be the least of his
troubles.
