Hi, Robin --

James Piatt (born 1704 Piscataway NJ, died 1779 Middlesex Co., NJ, will)
was the son of Thomas Piatt (1681-1705/6) and Mercy Hull
(1683/4-1746). James was married in 1727/8 in Middlesex Co., NJ, as the
second husband of the widow Ruth FitzRandolph Drake (bc1706, d1776); both
are buried at the Piscataway Baptist Church. Ruth's first husband had been
Joseph Drake (b1703); their son was Joseph Drake (Jr.)
(1726-1803). According to my notes, following are the children of James
Piatt and Ruth FitzRandolph (Drake) Piatt:

1. Ruth Piatt, b1728/29 Middlesex NJ, (? d<1778, before her father's will ?)
2. Experience Piatt, b1732 Piscataway NJ, d1813, m1756 to Humphrey Martin
3. Thomas Piatt, b1733, d1760 will, buried at the Piscataway Baptist
Church, married Martha (? Drake ?) (b1734, d1760)
4. James Piatt, b1734 Piscataway NJ, d1800 Somerset NJ inventory, married
Elizabeth (? Stelle ?) (bc1743, d1780), both are buried at the Piscataway
Baptist Church [NOTE -- contrary to one theory, this James is NOT the James
Piatt who married Mary Magdalena "Lena" (King) Moelich in 1782 in Oldwick,
Hunterdon Co., NJ]
5. Joan ("Jean") Piatt, b1735, d1814, married Abraham Munday (b1736, d1811)
6. John Piatt, b1736 Piscataway NJ, (? d<1774 ?, or ? d<1778, before his
father's will ?), apparently married Joanna ---- (b1736, d1810), she
married as her second husband William Tappen (1838-1774); both Joanna and
William were buried in Woodbridge
7. ? Rachel Piatt ?
8. Ephraim Piatt, b1738 Piscataway NJ, d1813 Middlesex NJ will, m1761
Mercy Stelle (b1743/4, d1821 will); she was the daughter of Benjamin Stelle
(d1792). The children of Ephraim and Mercy included, among others, John
(1763-1847), Asher (b<1779, d1827), and Rachel (1769-1806).
9. Mary Piatt, b1740, d<1778, m1 to ---- Veiland, m2 to Daniel Williamson
10. Mercy Piatt, b1742, m1760 William Williamson

Ephraim is the person who was apparently recorded as Ebenezer in the will
you cited. There appear to be five living children named in the will. The
will said "four children" were to receive money; these would have been
Ephraim ("Ebenezer"), Experience, Joan ("Jean"), and Mercy. The fifth
living child, who was given any money, was James (Jr.), who was the oldest
living son; the oldest son, Thomas, had already died in 1760. James Jr.
may have already taken over his parents' land or otherwise received his
share; alternatively, since James Jr. and his wife apparently had no
children, they may have lived as dependents of another family member, and
James Sr. may not have considered them to be entitled to a share of his
estate. Children of James and Ruth who had already died prior to their
father's death certainly included Thomas and Mary, and apparently included
Ruth, John, and Rachel.

Best wishes for the New Year!
