Greetings, All,
The stones ARE preserved. Louise MARTIN MOHLER in her booklet on 'Jacob
MARTIN of Jefferson County, Ohio' writes:

'Both tombstones for Dinah and Jonathan were unearthed in 1971-72 winter
when digging up an old Nike missile at the old Hadley Airport. This airport
is rather famous since that is where the American Air-Mail system had its
beginnings. The tombstones were eventually taken to the METLAR House, 1281
River Road, Piscataway. Mrs. Cora Lee ROMANO was kind enough to make me a
beautiful rubbing of Jonathan's stone. [note: the copy in the booklet isn't
very clear for photocopying further.] It was her husband who rescued the
stones on that winter day. It reads,
In Memory of
Jonathan MARTIN
Father of Jacob
MARTIN ESQ who
deceased July 11th AD
1768 in the 82nd
Year of His Age

(Louise writes further) Evidently, Jacob was the one who purchased the stone.
It is a little amusing that as the father of 15 children, his son Jacob had
his name on the monument.
The stone for Dinah was the same design.
A third atone for a young daughter was also uncovered; Dinah died at age
18 in 1794, daughter of Jacob.' (end of entry in booklet)

WHEN I can find the snapshots a cousin who formerly resided in Piscataway
took for me, I'll offer jpgs to anyone interested. Sorry, my filling system
leaves something to be desired.

Best 2003 wishes to all,
Caral Mechling Bennett
