Subject: [PIATT] 2003 Conference
Date: Fri, 10 Jan 2003 11:43:30 -0500 (Eastern Standard Time)
Hi researchers--
I just wanted to remind/update everyone on what's in store in Richmond this
June.
We have scheduled our Piatt Research Conference (the 19th one!) for Richmond
June 22-28. Directions are on the website (www.piattresearchers.net) and
Richmond is easily accessible by planes, trains, and automobiles. Metro
Richmond also has a good bus system for inner-city travel.
I'm still awaiting final contracts from the school, but Virginia
Commonwealth University has promised us 30 beds (in two-bed rooms) The beds
are currently bunked but can be unbunked for a small additional fee.
Currently the price we have negotiated is $40 per ROOM per night ($20 per
bed) plus the fee for the unbunking. They will also provide meeting space
for us every night. There are telephones in the rooms, but Im not sure what
sort of service we will have in the summer.
Im also in communication with the Annabelle Lee for our dinner cruise on the
James River. Current advertised prices range from $35-50 each, but Im
working toward a group rate, hopefully of $30. The ship will board at 6:30
and leave at 7, with a return at 9:30. Dinner is a southern buffet.
Housing and the dinner cruise will need to be reserved by each attendee
through me. These things will have to be paid in full when registered. I
have set a reservation deadline of May 31, 2003, but will not be taking
confirmed reservations until I get a signed contract from VCU for housing.
At that time I will be asking that anyone who plans to attend contact me.
Breakfast at the school dining hall (unlimited servings) will run about $4
00 per person (they will take credit cards or cash). This is not a group
event--also need not be purchased in advance.
If we visit the Historical Society (or as my hubbly like to call them, the
Hysterical Society) admission is $5 ($4 for seniors) or we can purchase a
Richmond City Pass for $15 which will give 5 admissions to the following:
Virginia Historical Society Children's Museum of Richmond Lewis Ginter
Botanical Garden Maymont Science Museum of Virginia Virginia
Department of Historic Resources Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Edgar
Allan Poe Museum John Marshall House Museum of the Confederacy The
Valentine Museum Virginia Aviation Museum Virginia State Capitol
Wilton St. John's Episcopal Church IMAX Dome at the Science Museum
Chesterfield Museum Complex Black History Museum & Cultural Center. These
passes are available online or though me. Parking is free.
Local bus service is $1.25 each ride. Anyone who purchases bus tickets in
advance can get a book of 10 tickets for $10. I can provide those in your
registration package as well if they are prepaid with your registration.
Seniors can ride the bus for 50 cents if you provide your medicare card.
Again, pre-paid tickets are available for seniors at $5 for 10 tickets. I
can get those too if you like. Transfers for seniors are free, 10-15 cents
for others. I doubt we will need transfers though as the College is
centrally located.
This information is provided to give you an idea of how much to budget for
the trip. Here is a hypothetical scenario. Jane wants to stay in the dorm,
eat breakfast at the dining hall, lunch and dinner on her own, and do the
James River Cruise. She plans to visit the Historical Society and at least
two other sites, and she plans to mostly ride the bus. Here is her cost
breakdown:
Housing--6 nights @ $20 $120
Breakfast M-F in the dining hall $20
Breakfast Sat. $5 (McDonalds)
Dinner Cruise $50
Bus tickets $15
Dinner Sun, Mon, Tue, Thurs, Fri est $25 each nite $125
Total budget (without transportation to and from Richmond or any additional
nights beyond Sunday through Friday) $335 (this is just an estimate)
SO BOOK YOUR VACATION! And please let me know if you are planning to attend
(If you havent already) so I can increase the number of beds we need if
necessary. Here is the potential list I have--note it's not written in
stone!
Me, Christine, Anita, Laverne, Caral, Liz, Sherolynn, Jim & Edith, Joe
&Paulie, Marion, Marianne, Bill & Marilyn, Chet & fiance, Dick & Mary, Ira,
Beth, Ken & Jo. That's already 23! If you don't see your name and you
think you may attend, please let me know so I can get a tentative head count
Also, anyone who is interested in teaching one of our four SHORT (45 minute)
courses--Overview of Richmond Research, Intro to Piatts, Basic Genealogy, or
Brick Walls--please let me know. Sherolynn? If you read this please
contact me with your choice *grin*.
I am SO excited about the conference. I truly feel there is much to be
learned in Richmond, and so much opportunity for tourism too! When the
plans are complete, I will pass along the more touristy options as well for
those days you don't want to research, as well as day-trip options to
Baltimore and DC for more intense research.
Please pass along any suggestions or ideas too!
See you there,
Robin
