The William Piatt who died in 1863 in Tennessee (see below) was likely to
have been William Piatt (born ca 1840), son of James Piatt (born ca 1812,
carpenter, died 1890 in Marshall Co., IL) and Laurane Hubb. All three
appeared together in the 1850 census for Greene Co., PA.

James and Louranie Piatt, both aged 68, were listed in the 1880 census for
Richland, Marshall Co., Illinois. Although the census record says that the
mother of James (who was Julianna Engles) was born in Germany, she was
actually born in Frederick, Maryland. This 1880 census record can be found
at the FamilySearch site at the following location:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1880US_7111622&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=99

William's grandparents were Amos Piatt and Julianna Engles (daughter of
Peter Engels, Jr.). Their family of Amos and Julianna is documented in the
midst of a very complete Engles genealogy at the following Web page:
http://www.engle-family.org/ancestors/anctree/pafg07.htm#1028
In addition, there is a very detailed chronology of the activities of Peter
Engels, Jr., and his family in Maryland and Pennsylvania at the following
Web page:
http://www.engle-family.org/ancestors/peterjr.htm

Further study of the activities of the Engels family may provide some clues
to solving some of the puzzles about Amos Piatt.
