This message is being posted to the PIATT surname board at Ancestry.com.

Do all or most Piatts really share a common ancestor as we suspect we do? Was John of France really a separate line as Lodge suggests or a grandson of Rene Piatt as O E Monnette thought? What about the Joseph Pyatt of NC whose Revolutionary War pension application stated he was from Warwickshire, England? Or the Pyotts of Upper Darby PA?

It is now possible to use science to help sort out this puzzle. The Piatt Surname DNA study has begun with several samples already at the lab to be analyzed. We hope the results will show a common ancestor within a certain time span.

We invite any male Piatt by any spelling variation of that name to join us in the study. Sampling is easy. It is a cheek swab with no blood or hair samples required. The Y-DNA will be studied. This is the DNA which is passed virtually unchanged from father to son to son to son and so on. Unfortunately, this eliminates any females from being eligible to participate. If there is a female in the line of descent betweem the Piatt ancestor and the descendant this breaks the passage of the Y-DNA and makes the descendant not eligible. So only men named Piatt or a variation of the name would quality.

Females can still participate indirectly by encouraging their father, brother or male cousin to join the study. It is also possible for someone with a great interest in genealogy to "sponsor" another person who has the DNA but less interest in the research.
