Mary Smith is thought to have been the second wife of William Peatt, so it might
be possible that Mary Elizabeth Jane Peyatt who married John C Ward was from the
first marriage to a woman whose identity is still unknown. The article in the
WEST VIRGINIA HERITAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA, Vol 22, pp 4848-4851, states that Mary
Peyatt Ward's parents came from New Jersey.
