Ann Carter Piatt, who married Benjamin Fanklin Piatt in Bartholomew Co In, was
the daughter of Nathan Carter and Elizabeth Leonard.
Two additional items about Ann's family might be of interest. The "Original
Tract Book of Bartholomew County," by Jane Murphy for the Joseph Hart Charpter,
DAR, 1976-77 shows Nathan Carter purchased 84.56 acres in the SW 1/4 of Sec 2,
T9N R5E, and 160 acres across the road, the NW 1/4 of Sec 11, T9N R5E. An 1879
Atlas shows this land divided into several parcels but all were in the Carter
name.
And from Obituraries and Miscellaneous Items, Bartholomew Co IN; DAR typescript:
>From "Daily Evening Democrat," Friday 6 May 1881, page 2: Mrs Ann Piatt, b 3 Dec
1814, NJ (d/o Nathan & Elizabeth Carter, who came to IN in 1820, settling near
Columbus) m 277 Jun 1833, Benjamin F Piatt; had 13 children, 6 lived to maturity,
4 sons and 2 daughters. Joined ME Church at age 15, Carter's Chapel. Husband
was buried 27 Jul 1875. Oldest daughter died last September; younger daughter
died 23 Apr. Mrs Piatt died 28 April.
I think it was in the mid-1980s when I visited Carter Chapel and the cemetery
there in Columbus IN. Four of Benjamin and Ann's children, Elizabeth R, John W,
Lafayette and Rebecah J, are buried in the cemetery although Benjamin and Ann
themselves are buried in Shelby Co IN. It's a sad mystery why one family had to
loose so many young children to death.
As I recall Ann Carter Piatt's father Nathan had a part in the establishment of
the church called Carter's Chapel, donating the land at least. So it's probable
that Ann was married at Carter's Chapel since she had joined the church at age
15.
