Hi, Liz --
Regarding A. B. Piatt, to whom you referred in your message below. Could
he have been Abner Piatt, who is shown in the following 1880 census record?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1880 Chicago, Cook, Illinois
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Abner PIATT Self M Male W 53 PA Commn. Merchant PA PA
Annie PIATT Wife M Female W 40 PA PA PA
Hermand PIATT Son S Male W 23 IOWA Commn. Merchant PA PA
Harry PIATT Son Male W 16 IOWA PA PA
Emma PIATT Dau S Female W 9 IOWA At School PA PA
Annie PIATT Dau S Female W 5 IL PA PA
Silbe KUKAWSKI Other Female W 21 PRUSSIA Servant PRUSSIA PRUSSIA
Charlie MCGUIRE Other Male B 25 PA Coachman PA PA
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This record suggests that Abner and Annie Piatt were from Pennsylvania,
started their family in Iowa in the 1850s, and then moved to Illinois in
the 1870s. Not too far east of Chicago along the lakeshore is La Porte
Co., IN, where Hannah Piatt and others of her children lived.
In 1880 Joseph P. Piatt's family was in El Paso, Woodford Co., Illinois.
In 1880 Josiah Piatt's family was in the 4th Ward, La Porte, La Porte,
Indiana (indexed as Josia PRATT).
You can use the LDS FamilySearch site to look up records for the 1880
census at the following address:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
Sometimes, it is better to use the census records search page, because on
it, unlike the main search page, you do not need to enter a first name
(e.g., you can select to get all the Piatts born in a particular state):
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp
Beware that the FamilySearch site seems to be missing some of the 1880
records. I have seen several 1880 census records for Piatts that do not
seem to be included in the database for this site, though of course they
might be listed under some unusual variant spelling, as happened with
Josiah Piatt above.
