The following is the first three pages of the Packer genealogy. There are a

several pages (Mostly dealing with Mowery genealogy). The first three pages
might be of interest to those tracking Benjamin Piatt.

Part I. The Family of Benjamin Piatt
Part II. The Connell Family
Part III. Index
Foreword
This short family history is published as a preliminary report on the Piatt
family and the Connell family. It is by no means complete, and probably will
not be for several years. Much additional information is needed before it
will be presented in permanent form. Among the many questions to be answered
are those brought forth in the manuscript. In addition, it is desired to
complete the lines which are left unfinished.
Any information about any of the persons mentioned herein will be greatly
appreciated by the author. Any corrections or additions to this information
given here will also be of great importance. Names and addresses of
relatives would prove to be of great benefit.
Among the many persons who gave data for this manuscript are the following:
Minnie A. Rietz, Box 671, Wheatland, Wyoming
Linnie Thomas Pettit, Box 481, West Union, Ohio
Cora Thomas Riffle, West Union, Ohio, now deceased
Mildred Moore Fields, Rural Route Two, West Union, Ohio
Enna Agnes Piatt, 310 LaFayette Avenue, Bellevue, Kentucky
Orie Grooms Cox, 415 Michigan Avenue, Saint Louis, Michigan
Bertha Piatt Moore, West Union, Ohio, now deceased
It is the hope of the author that this manuscript may prove to be of interest
and benefit to those interested in the families mentioned in it.
THE FAMILY OF BENJAMIN PIATT
Unfortunately, there seems to be some argument as to whom the parents of
Benjamin Piatt were. There is, likewise, some discrepancy about his
birthplace.
One of the descendants of Benjamin, Cora Thomas Riffle, did considerable
research on the Piatt family. Her records say that he was the son of John
and Frances (Van Vliet Wykoff) Piatt. Mrs. Riffle is now deceased, and her
records do not show the sources of her information. However, she once told
us that the research made by the D.A.R. were not wrong in regard to the Piatt
family, and that that was where she got her information about Benjamin.
N. Louise Lodge, in her book The Tribe of Jacob (Piatt), does not make any
mention of a son Benjamin. She says that the sons of John and Frances Piatt
were:
John, Jr., born in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1789
Abraham, probably born in Holland, in 1741
William, born in 1743
Daniel, born December 18, 1745, at Six Mile Run, New Jersey
Jacob, born May 16, 1747, also at Six Mile Run.
Benjamin was born in 1753. He had three sons, two of whom were named John
and Jacob, which seem to be very common names in the family of John and
Frances Piatt. Mrs. Riffle said that Benjamin was born in New Jersey, near
Trenton, about 1753. The History of Adams County, Ohio, page 336 says near
Trenton, about 1753 in Virginia. It is hoped that some records may be found
that will clearly establish the parentage and birthplace of this Benjamin
Piatt.
Records in the Adjutant General's Office, the War Department, in the city of
Washington, D.C. give the following information:
"Benjamin Piatt enlisted as a private in Capt. James Sullivan's company, 13th
Virginia Regiment, some time previous to September 6, 1776, commanded by Col.
William Russel and Col. John Gibson. He was transferred to Major Taylor's
company in the same regiment between October, 1777, and March 1779, and was
promoted to the rank of sergeant some time between these two dates. He was
transferred to Capt. Uriah Springer's company of light infantry between June
and September, 1779. He was discharged on December 2, 1779."
The History of Adams County says that he was a first lieutenant under General
McCullough.
He received a bounty warrant in 1784 in Washington County, Virginia. At that
time he was married to a Virginian, Polly Waddell (or is it Waddle?). In
1810 they moved to Adams County, Ohio, settling in Tiffin Township. Benjamin
died in 1851 at the age of 98 and was buried in Trotter's Cemetery in Tiffin
Township, where no stone marks his grave. Although it is not know when, we
know that P9lly died some time after her husband. The children of Benjamin
and Polly Piatt were:
Nancy Piatt, who married a Dr. Rose and lived in Indiana
Jacob Piatt, who married Polly Ann Trotter
Margaret Piatt, who married Newton Denning or Denney or John Duning
(different records give his name in those three ways.)
Elizabeth Piatt, who married Lewis Trotter
Benjamin Piatt, who married Myra Bayless
Mary Piatt, who married John Black, son of Samuel and Esther (Connell) Black
Sally Piatt, who married Harrison Duning
And John Piatt, who married Hester Black.
The children of Jacob and Polly Ann (Trotter) Piatt were:
Jacob Piatt, who died single
Nancy Jane Piatt, who married John ___
Mary Ann Piatt, who married Tom Moore
James Piatt, who married Mary ___
Richard Piatt, who married Mary ___
And Alice Piatt, who married John Black.
John Piatt, son (?) Benjamin and Polly (Waddell) Piatt, was born in Virginia
about 1804, possibly in Washington County. In 1824, he married Hester Black,
who was born in Tiffin Township, Adams County, on July 29, 1809, to Samuel
and Esther (Connell) Black. Hester died November 2, 1881, and was buried at
Stone Chapel, Adams County. John was never heard from again after he left
his wife and family in 1845. Eleven children were born to John and Hester,
of whom there is a record of eight:
Andrew Jackson Piatt, born July 14, 1825
Horatio Piatt, born December 28, 1827
Jane Amanda Piatt, born May 29, 1830
John A. Piatt, born November 7, 1832
Hester Margaret Piatt, born in 1835, died in a brush fire in 1845
Lewis Piatt, born January 15, 1837
Zachariah Piatt, born 1840, died when a baby
Sara Elizabeth Piatt, born 1843
Andrew Jackson Piatt, oldest child of John and Hester (Black) Piatt, was born
July 14, 1825, in Adams County, Ohio. On June 3, 1857, he married Elizabeth
young. His death occurred on March 16, 1902, with burial in Humboldt,
Illinois. Elizabeth died in 1926 in Bellevue, Kentucky; she is buried in
Humboldt. The ten children of Andrews and Elizabeth were all born at Stone
Chapel, Adams County:
