For Bob Skinner
Sorry not to have answered your e-mail of last week as yet. Perhaps it would
be just as well to post the information here for the archives.
Jacob Piatt (Pyeatte, also called Jacob Piatt III) died in Washington Co PA in
1784. His will was proved on March 31 of that year but was written four years
earlier on 26 Aug 1780. The will is on file in the office of the Prothonotary
in Washington Co PA. But the will was copied into the Will Book, possibly at
the time it was proved, so what is there is not the original paper of the will.
Jacob's will named his wife Elizabeth and 11 children. Any married names of
the women are not mentioned. The Widow Piatt and Eliz Piate of the census
refer to the widow of Jacob. It is thought that Elizabeth died between 1790
and 1792 when Jacob's land was sold by a son "in trust for the heirs."
As to the children of Jacob Pyeatte this is all we know to date:
1. Mary (named in will but not called daughter) b c1746; d 1827, Ohio Co VA; m
John Wayt, no children; buried with John in Old Stone Church Cemetery, Elm
Grove WV.
2. Jacob (IV) b c1749; moved to Ohio Co VA in 1777; then to Adams Co OH; m
Nancy _____? Jacob had a number of children.
3. Rachel, b c1751. Nothing further known but in 1988 Piatt Family Newsletter
subscriber Stan Palmer of Jonesboro IL reported he was a descendant of Edward
Fowler and Rachel Piatt b 1751. Mr Palmer also reported that a daughter of
Edward and Rachel Piatt Fowler, Mary Fowler, was born c1764 and married c1790
in Ohio Co VA to Hugh Steers. The Steers later moved to Boone Co KY. The
dates here are a little tight on Rachel Piatt. I have no further information
on Fowler or Steers.
4.. Robert b 15 Aug 1753 in Path Valley, PA; d after 1835; was Rev War soldier
and pensioner in Ohio Co VA, m Mary _____?
5. Benjamin b c1756, Path Valley PA; d 1851, Adams Co OH; m/1 c1775 to Mary
Philips, daughter of Rev David Philips, divorced 24 Nov 1790; m/2 c1795 to Mary
Waddell, daughter of John Waddell, in Ohio Co VA. Later lived in Adams Co OH.
(There is an alternate theory, however, for this Benjamin. There was a
Benjamin Piatt who was an outlaw of record in Louisiana Territory at the same
time, running with his comrade Lewis Wetzel of Ohio Co VA. Circumstances of
the divorce from Mary Philips and subsequent loss of land for debt to his ex-
father-in-law in Washington Co PA add substance to the theory that Benjamin,
son of Jacob, went to LA while another Benjamini married Mary Waddel and
settled in Adams Co OH. More research is needed here.
6. Rebecca b c1757. Nothing further known.
7. Dinah/Diana/Dine b c1761. Married Thomas Thornburg. The Thornburgs had
several children. Thomas and Diana Piatt Thornburg are buried in the Union
Presbyterian Church Cemetery (I think that's the name) in Robinson Township,
Allegheny Co PA.
8. Sarah/Susannah b c1763. Nothing further known. However, I had a query
some time ago which makes me wonder if this woman married a Ross and had a son
Jacob Piatt Ross. If so, Bath Co KY and later IN would figure into this
research.
9. James b c1765; d 1847, moved to Monroe Co OH and had a number of children.
Married Nancy Coleman(?) and later Barbara Bruce Craig. My husband's line.
10. Thomas b c 1767 in Path Valley PA; moved to Belmont Co OH, Richland Co OH,
Grant Co IN; d c 1850. Married Catherine Bell, daughter of Robert Bell who
founded Bellville OH. Thomas and Catherine had a number of children.
11. Elizabeth b c1769, nothing further known.
If the Fowlers went to Boone Co KY and there is need for research there be
cautious not to confuse the more famous Jacob Piatt of Boone Co KY with the one
who died in Washington Co PA in 1784. The Boone Co Jacob Piatt was an officer
in the Revolutionary War, one of the Five Revolutionary Brothers of New Jersey.
Boone Co Jacob built Federal Hall which is now in ruins in the county and was
the grandfather of the two Piatts who built the Piatt Castles in Logan Co OH.
If we have figured correctly, Boone Co Jacob and the Washington Co PA Jacob
were first cousins.
Hope this helps.
