When the father of William Peatt of WV, who married Mary Smith, is found and
the connection made back to New Jersey, the cousinship between their
descendant John who married Mary Snyder and the John Piatt who married Mary
Truax can be figured.

*grin* I was actually hoping to do it the other way--see if I could find a
connection that would lead us to the parentage of William!

Why did John Piatt of Monroe Co OH move to Jackson Co WV? One possibility
is to work in the oil fields. The first well was drilled in 1859 and the
boom became serious after the Civil War. More information on the history of
the oil business in Ohio and West Virginia can be seen at:

I hadn't thought of that--I do know the McCullough's and the Bowlby's were
into oil in the Wood/Wirt County area back in that time, and both of those
families are peripheral to the Piatts. Also the Hartleys (my grandad worked
for Hartley Oil in Jackson county come to think of it).

Thats a great link--I will have to see what else is around regarding wells.
My first husband's stepdad is a petroleum engineer in Wood County. Maybe he
knows of historical items that would have employee names on them.

Thanks Laverne! Im not giving up until I get William's father!

Robin
