This is getting complicated, Robin:
<<I hadn't thought of that--I do know the McCullough's and the Bowlby's were
into oil in the Wood/Wirt County area back in that time, and both of those
families are peripheral to the Piatts. Also the Hartleys (my grandad worked
for Hartley Oil in Jackson county come to think of it).>>
It's probably just coincidental that the Bowlby name is connected to Piatt in New Jersey, I believe at New Hamptom along the Musconetcong River about 1820(?). Check out:

And Hartley is the middle name of Michael Hartley Piatt, who, I understand, has recently published a book on the history of Bodie CA. Michael is from CA but Hartley comes from his mother's family of Crawford Co OH as I understand it.
Oil and gas brought a bit of prosperity to some fortunate folks throughout SE Ohio and northern WV during the latter half of the 1800s. The large homes on Eastern Avenue in Woodsfield, built during that time, were built with oil and gas money. My husband's Davis line of near Salem WV benefited from wells on their property. I acquired an 8x10 photo of Davis No 7 about the time an enemy of J R Ewing blew up Ewing No 23 (or 22?) on the TV program Dallas. The timing was amusing.
Newspapers of the time, such as the Spirit of Democracy of Woodsfield OH, reported on the progress of drilling in the area--whether a site produced a dry hole or a gusher. Ah, those were the days.
