The 1850 Cabell Co (W)VA census concerns James Henry Piatt, the most prolific Piatt to date (I think). And, Robin, James chose as his second wife a SMITH! And their daughter married a SMITH! What a surprise! Plus, one of the sons of the second family had Martin as his middle name. The Piatt Family Newsletter Volume 4, 1989 published this family group sheet:

An undated and unidentified obituary of James Henry Piatt from the files of descendant Pat Eickoff states that James died at 10:30 p.m. on 7 February, that he married Tabitha Morgan in 1839 and moved to Missouri in 1853. The obituary states that James had twelve (not ten) children by his first wife, with eight, four sons and daughters of this first family surviving him. According to this account Tabitha died in February 1861. James had nine children by his second wife, six sons and three daughters, with five of them surviving him. James raised two step-daughters, children of Sarah Smith Lloyd: Mrs James M Piatt of Pilot Grove, and Mrs James L Dix of Blackwater MO. He joined the old Concord Church, later known as the Union Baptist Church, where his funeral was held.

The 1880 census gives the birthplace of James Piatt as VA with his father's as NH and his mother's as VA. PFN questions the NH birthplace, suggesting instead that it should be NJ. James Henry Piatt's birth in Augusta Co VA puts him in close relationship to James and Mary Donahue Piatt and Benjamin and Sarah Donahue Piatt who were married in that county.

Additional information on this and colateral lines was discovered by researcher Jo Lauer after the family group sheet was published in PFN so I would rather she give further information on the parentage of James Henry Piatt if it is known.
